Last month, we asked you what your favorite Thanksgiving tradition was – and Synergy readers gobbled up the question and sent us a feast of answers. As most would expect, your favorite Thanksgiving traditions revolve around food and family.
Thanksgiving is a day that brings up many warm memories. A survey participant told us she serves a special bread each year – a recipe she learned by helping her 90 year old grandmother cook for Thanksgiving in the years before her relative passed away.
“Besides eating all our favorite foods, we reminisce about previous years and about funny anecdotes which made us laugh. It is also a bittersweet experience because we remember the loved ones who are not with us and how they blessed us with their presence throughout their lifetime,” another reader shared.
Many of you enjoy cooking turkey with all the fixings with your family and several report going for a deep-fried bird over the roasted version. Along with serving stuffed apples, one survey participant described how a “Turduckin” – duck stuffed inside a chicken that’s stuffed inside a turkey and then deep fried – is the centerpiece of a family Thanksgiving menu.
“Once the turkey is in the oven, we gather with muffins and hot mulled cider to watch the parades on TV,” a reader told us. Watching NFL football with family and friends is also high on the list of Thanksgiving traditions. So is watching the classic holiday movie “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Planning the next day’s Black Friday shop-a-thon is part of Thanksgiving fun for many of you, too. Not only did some survey participants tell us they bring out all the ads after dinner and strategize on what sales to hit the next day, but many of you plan to use Black Friday bargains to help others, too. One extended family has what they’ve dubbed the Black Friday Race: “We pick items from a list we have for charity and see who can accumulate the best deals for their charity. It’s a game where everyone wins!”
Thanksgiving, in fact, seems to live up to his name – giving thanks is an important part of the day. “Besides eating all our favorite foods, we reminisce about previous years and about funny anecdotes which made us laugh. It is also a bittersweet experience, because we remember the loved ones that are not with us,” a reader told us. “This is a tradition we must instill in our young ones so that they carry on with the same grateful moments of gathering around loved ones.”
We selected Kay J. at random from everyone who participated in our survey to receive a $50 Visa gift card. Kay told us she has a very large family and this year 50 relatives got together for Thanksgiving at her aunt’s house. “It’s our tradition to all write something we're thankful for on a scrap of paper. Then before we sit to eat, we each grab a paper from the bowl and read it to the group. Some are funny, some are sincere, and it's fun guessing who wrote which note,” she told us.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to share your wonderful Thanksgiving stories. |
