Last month, we asked about your favorite spine-tingling movies – whether they portrayed ghosts, ghouls, vampires or any other kind spookiness. Synergy readers responded enthusiastically with descriptions of films old and new, ranging from the horrifically scary to some that have you laughing.

Topping the list of fave frightening flicks is “The Exorcist”, which first started scaring audiences back in l973. Several other classics came in a close second – “The Omen”, “Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Halloween”, “Poltergeist” and “Carrie.”

“When the hand came out of the ground in the cemetery at the end of ‘Carrie’, it scared me so much that I couldn't stop screaming!” one reader admitted. Another saw “Horror in the Wax Museum” as a teen back in the l980s and told us the thrills and chills are still haunting after all these years.

Three movies based on books by horror master Stephen King were popular picks: “The Shining”, “Pet Sematary” and “The Fog”. The “Paranormal Activity” series of films Poltergeist”, “The Amityville Horror,” “Friday the 13th” and the l970s version of “Dracula” starring Christopher Lee were also top goose-bump producing choices.

“The Others,” a ghost story with a twist ending, “The Ring” and “The Cabin in the Woods” drew kudos for their super suspenseful plots. The new movie “Sinister,” which was released just in time for Halloween last month, revolves around the discovery of mysterious old home movies that plunge a family into a supernatural horror. Sound scary? It is, according to several survey participants.

Many of you like laughing while watching ghosts, monsters, witches and other creepy characters in movies like “Ghostbusters”, “Hocus Pocus,” "From Dusk Till Dawn," and “Young Frankenstein”.

We selected Amy P. at random from everyone who sent in their movie choices to receive a boo-tiful $50 Visa gift card. Amy told us that although the 2008 movie “The Strangers” has no ghosts or goblins, by depicting real, crazed people it scared her more than many films peopled with vampires and other creatures. Thanks to everyone who participated!
