Last month we asked what kind of pets you have – and why they are so important to you. From dogs and cats to fish, survey participants told us heartwarming tales of the companion animals they love.
Dogs ranked in first place among our survey respondents, but only by a whisker. Cats run a close second in popularity. Finned friends drew praise, too. One reader described two aquariums full of beautiful cichlids that are “calming to watch and just peaceful.” Another reader’s family has an assortment of fish as pets in a household that also includes chickens and cats.

What kind of pooches appeal to Synergy readers? All kinds, from purebreds to rescue mixes. One survey participant told us about a beloved and gentle pit bull, Zeus, who provides an elderly mom with lots of love and affection. An energetic German Shorthaired Pointer/Whippet mix named Watson is given credit by another pet lover for helping him be more physically active.

Bentley, a Maltese/poodle mix, has black and white markings that look like he’s wearing a furry tuxedo. His owner says he’s “the cutest toy dog on the planet, calms me down and makes me happy!” Another Synergy reader explained how her cuddly little Maltese has helped her teach her children about responsibility: “They’ve learned to care for someone other than themselves. “

A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Ruby drew praise for her “..… heart of gold. She wants to sit beside you and comfort you. She would lay there for hours if you would.” One survey participant related how a loving multi-colored cocker spaniel named Tyler not only healed her broken heart after the loss of previous pets, but is exactly like a dog her late father owned.

From Maine Coons and Persians to the common short-haired variety, Synergy readers love their cats, too. A survey participant told us about the four special needs feline members in his family – three were rescue kitties, including one found on a highway near death and one who gets around fine with only three legs. Another reader described her cat greeting her as soon as she’s home from work: “She quietly snuggles at my feet regardless of my mood which makes me take a deep breath and release stress.”

We selected one survey participant at random, Mallory G, to receive a $50 Visa gift card. She has a mixed breed dog, Ira, she rescued from a shelter and calls her “best companion.” Thanks to everyone who participated!
