Last month, we asked how you celebrated that most American of holidays – the 4th of July. Family-centered activities were tops with Synergy readers. One used the time off to plant some new shrubs in the yard before gathering relatives together for a cook-out, another hosted an old-fashioned family reunion and still others opted for neighborhood celebrations.
“We had a big get-together that included both friends and family. There were tables for old fashion card games and dominos, kids played in water sprinklers and we grilled lots of food,” a reader told us. Barbecue, hotdogs and hamburgers and lemonade were tops on Independence Day cook-out menus.
The heat wave across the nation made the 4th a super-hot day – inspiring some of you to spend time near a pool or other places where you could take a cooling swim. “We visited a national park, swam in the natural spring, and had a picnic,” one reader said. Another hosted a party complete with a Dixieland barge and boat races at a family lake home.
Fireworks were on the agenda for the majority of our survey responders. ”The fireworks in our hometown are within walking distance, so it’s very easy to have a nice celebration on Independence Day!” a participant wrote.
But not everyone watched a light show in the sky – fireworks were banned in some areas due to dry conditions. One reader, noting it was extremely hot outside in her part of the country on July 4th, opted to stay inside and watch fireworks on television while staying cool with air conditioning. Another, faced with 102 degrees heat outdoors, spent time with pets, reading and talking to family on the phone while staying cool indoors.
“I adopted a rescue dog a few days before Independence Day, so I spent the holiday getting to know him,” a survey participant shared. “We went for lots of short walks (it was HOT outside!) and then we spent a quiet night watching a movie and staying AWAY from the scary fireworks.”
We selected P. Brown at random from our survey participants to receive a $50 Visa gift card. Thanks to everyone who took the time to share your Independence Day celebrations!
