Everyone likes to save money – and when we asked Synergy readers last month to share ways to economize, you came up with a host of thrifty living ideas.

The most popular tip? Keeping shopping impulses under control by only buying what you need and shopping strategically by checking prices in stores and online before you make purchases. Sticking to a shopping list is an important plan of action, too, when it comes to avoiding overspending.

“If I see something in a store I didn't plan to buy, I tell myself I can go back later to get it if I really want it,” a Synergy reader explained. “By following these strategies I've accumulated enough savings to put my daughter through private college without using student loans.”

Making a mental note of the best gas prices as you drive to work can help you locate gas stations where you can fill up your tank for less money, another survey participant shared. Your smart and easy ways to stretch dollars also include replacing cable TV service with movies and television shows that can be streamed online for a few dollars a month and giving up a land line home phone for a basic cell phone plan that provides unlimited texts and ample minutes for calls.

Sharon M. was selected at random from everyone who sent in their money saving ideas – she’ll receive a $50 Visa gift card. Thanks to everyone who participated!
